Dear international readers – time for the big Is Måns Zelmerlöw A Homophobe FAQ to settle this issue before he wins Eurovision in May.
Måns was on a Swedish rock-singer-gone-hobby-chef’s cooking show on tv, got very drunk, and had a conversation about gay people.
What did he say?
That being gay was a deviation from the norm, that being straight is more natural and that gay people can’t have biological children
But what did he mean?
The kind interpretation is that he meant this in a strictly factual way – being gay isn’t the norm mathematically speaking, and no, as of yet two men can’t make a baby (though two women probably could, actually, with some help from science). The unkind interpretation is that he meant that being gay is unnatural and that gays shouldn’t have kids.
What do you think he meant?
I think he drunkenly tried to have a discussion he hadn’t really thought through, got tangled up in his own words, and fucked up.
Has he apologised?
Yes, several times.
Has he taken it back?
Yes, several times.
Was he stupid to say those things?
Yes, very stupid. People got hurt.
Is he a homophobe?
No, he is not.
How do you know?
Well, I can’t know, but I have met and interviewed the guy like 100 times and I’m pretty sure. I mean, we have mutual (gay) friends who swear he’s not.
Should we forgive him?
Yeah, I think so. He made a mistake, apologised, took it back.
But still, in vino veritas, deep down he might still be a secret homophobe?
Come on, would a homophobe wear this? Well actually yeah, a homophobe might, clothes have very little to do with it. That’s not really relevant, I know. I just think he looks hot in these pics and wanted to put them out there for everyone’s enjoyment.
